Profile: The University of the Philippines, the premier institution of higher learning in the country, was founded in 1908. U.P. Diliman is the flagship campus in the seven-campus U.P. system. Total enrollment in 1999-2000 was more than 26,000, including approximately 300 international students.

U.P. Diliman was formally designated as an autonomous campus in 1982. The 493-hectare campus in Quezon City is also the site of the U.P. System Administration offices. It also administers the programs in two regional centers: U.P. Clark/San Fernando and U.P. Olongapo. The University Library System maintains a collection of more than one million volumes. The U.P. Computer Center and the U.P. Press are both located in Diliman. U.P. Diliman has 23 degree-granting units. Other facilities include 10 residential halls, a health service, a shopping center and recreational facilities. The International Center accommodates international students and has a capacity of approximately 170 residents. The U.P. Balay Kalinaw can also house visiting professors and exchange students.

Locale: Diliman is located in Quezon City, considered to be the greenest city in Metro Manila. The campus is a self-contained community, but is also within ten minutes of the city's commercial center. Public transportation is cheap and readily available.

Divisions: Colleges of Science (biology, biotechnology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, mathematics, marine science, materials science and engineering, meteorology, microbiology, molecular biology, physics); Social Sciences and Philosophy (anthropology, demography, geography, history, international studies, Philippine studies, philosophy, political science, population studies, psychology, sociology); Arts and Letters (art studies, comparative literature, English studies, European languages, Filipino, creative writing in Filipino, speech communication, theater arts); Engineering (civil engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, energy engineering, environmental engineering, geodetic engineering, industrial engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, remote sensing, water resources). Other units of study are: architecture, Asian center, business administration, economics, education, fine arts, home economics, human kinetics, Islamic studies, labor and industrial relations, law, library science, mass communication, music, public administration and governance, social work and community development, statistics, tourism, urban and regional planning.

Language notes: English is the primary medium of instruction. Filipino, the Tagalog-based national language, is used in many undergraduate courses. Teachers may switch to English if an international student is enrolled in their class. Exchange students are advised to inquire before enrolling to avoid problems.

Room and board: Students will be housed in double- or triple-occupancy rooms at the U.P. International Center. A stipend is provided for housing and meal expenses.

Exchange dates: Late May to March, late May to October or early November to March.
